Calling all adult or junior firefighter candidates

The Alna Volunteer Fire Department will soon be starting a new session of the Basic Firefighter training course.  If you have been thinking about joining the AVFD, now is the time to apply and get your paperwork going so you can get your training started right away without having to wait.

Any member of the community, male or female, is eligible from teens (for our Junior Firefighter program) to adults of any age.  While we do need people to wear the air packs and go inside buildings to fight fires, not everyone has to be an interior firefighter.  There are plenty of other things to do with your training!  Note: Junior firefighters will be trained on the air packs but they are strictly supervised and limited to working outside the fireground at calls until they turn 18.

The target date for the start of the course is January 8.  There is no set ending date because the course schedule is flexible, according to the needs of class members. It should wrap up sometime in the spring.  Most classes will be held right in Alna at the AVFD on Wednesday nights.

If you are interested, all you need to do is show up on a Wednesday night (technically, meetings start at 7:00 but 6:30ish is when things really get going) to meet the members, ask some questions and, if you decide it's a good fit, fill out an application. If you would like more information on the requirements and benefits associated with joining the AVFD before you visit, you can contact Chief Mike Trask (avfd@tidewater.net), Deputy Chief Roger Whitney (rwhitney8587@gmail.com), President Beth Whitney (bwhitney2287@gmail.com) or any member of the AVFD.

Please consider joining to help provide a valuable service to the community!
